Democracy

2020 Manchester, England

The 2020 Democracy R&D Annual Meeting in Manchester, England was composed of three primary themes: opportunities and challenges for deliberative democracy, learning from practice from around the world, and the creation and adoption of a Democracy R&D Constitution. The selection of these themes reflected an important milestone that the time represented: 2020 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the creation of the citizens’ jury and the planning cell. Along with workshops on the themes, with different members and organizations presenting on different facets of these themes, the meeting also sought to celebrate the occasion. A plenary, with Ned Crosby, creator of the citizens’ jury, and Hans Luger Dienel, son of Peter Dienel, creator of the planning cell, as key speakers, was also held.
